Dummy: Sun-Times
While it’s the big dance companies- mostly ballet oriented and frequently ‘imported’- that get the lion’s share of attention here, there is also a steady hum from the rich creative minds engaged in contemporary dance. Chicago Dance Crash, now nearly five years old, is a solidly established ensemble that draws on a slew of styles, from pop (breakdance, hip hop, martial arts) to ballet, modern and jazz, impressively unifying them into a single aesthetic that might be dubbed ‘confrontational classic.’ There is a warrior, action film aspect to their work, but also plenty of emotional depth and probing that calls on lyrical movement underpinned by strong technique.
