Chicago Dance Crash presents LXIV (six.four), a two-part world premiere concert featuring new works” Immortal Games” and “LXIV (six.four)” at the Ann Barzel Theater in Visceral Dance Center on May 24, 2025.
LXIV (six.four) is an electrifying fusion of chess, dance, and live music that brings the game’s strategic brilliance to life. The performance unfolds in two dynamic halves, each exploring the intersections of movement, strategy, and human complexity.
James Morrow’s “Immortal Games” anchors the first half of the program, diving headfirst into the tactical brilliance of chess and the intensity of dance battles. Inspired by the legendary 1851 Immortal Chess Game, this piece blurs the lines between chess strategy and dance battle culture, showcasing raw athleticism, tactical precision, and real-time responsiveness. With a live score composed by Robert Flax and harnessing cutting-edge musical technology – including a custom-built midi-chessboard that generates a live sound score – this work pushes the boundaries of embodied game play.
The musical score for “Immortal Games” will be generated live at the annual Chicago Dance Crash Gala at Hairpin Arts Center on Monday, May 19th and recorded for the full-length performance on Saturday, May 24th. Tickets for this live performance excerpt are also available at ChicagoDanceCrash.com
The evening’s titular work “LXIV (six.four)”, features an original, ensemble-driven creation curated by Artistic Director KC Bevis and Rehearsal Director Phillip Wood. Built through collaboration and the amplification of each dancer’s strengths, Crash artists embody each chess piece as a fully realized character—complete with inner conflicts, complex relationships, and designated roles in the game of.. life? Or, well—chess. Part strategy, part story, this work transforms the chess board into a world of human complexity—where power is uneven, systems are already in play, and every move has consequences.
